How Often Should I Have My Chimney Or Furnace Cleaned?
Generally, if you use wood, it’s good to have the chimney cleaned at least every 6-12 months (more often if you burn two or more cords of wood, or if you burn green wood). Oil flues -especially if there’s a ventilation problem- need to be inspected and cleaned each year in order to avoid chimney blockage. Problems in the furnace or boiler can cause highly sooty conditions in the chimney. Even though natural gas is a clean-burning fuel, today’s high-efficiency gas furnaces create special problems. The fumes they produce are cooler and produce higher levels of water vapor than previous models, and this vapor in turn produces more water condensation. These vapors also contain chlorides from house-supplied combustion air which combine to form hydrochloric acid. The acid-water condensates from these latest natural gas furnaces cause more flue deterioration than previous models. It’s important to check the chimneys that vent these systems at least once each year.
What Should I Expect?
Chimney sweeps use long rods with a heavy metal bristle structure around the tip; it sort of looks like a giant bottlebrush. A drop cloth or plastic cover will be used to protect your home. For safety our staff will wear a mask and goggles in order to keep dust and debris out of their eyes and nose. The goal is to scrape all the coating that has built up from fires off of the chimney lining so that it falls down the chimney to be vacuumed and swept away.
What about Animals and Critters?
Animals like the chimney for a home because it’s dark, safe and dry. Having a chimney sweep in once or twice a year can help you keep furry and feathered friends away while maintaining a clean and efficient fireplace.
What Should I Do To Prepare For My Chimney Sweep?
To prepare for a chimney sweep’s visit first make sure that the fireplace is easily accessible. Move any furniture and decor out of the way, you may also want to cover it, just in case. You should also make sure that access to the chimney is clear so that the sweeper can do their job. Chimney sweeps are interested in your home and your personal safety. If you have questions about your fireplace and fireplace safety, they are an excellent resource, so feel free to ask questions when they arrive.
